The C₁V₁ = C₂V₂ equation
This is the workhorse equation for laboratory dilutions. It says the moles (or mass) of solute is conserved: the concentration times volume on the stock side equals the concentration times volume on the final side.
- C₁ — initial (stock) concentration
- V₁ — volume of stock to take
- C₂ — final (working) concentration
- V₂ — final total volume
Diluent volume to add equals V₂ − V₁. Use bacteriostatic water as the diluent when preparing multi-dose working solutions intended for up to 28-day storage at 2–8 °C.
