Bacteriostatic Water
Bacteriostatic water is sterile, non-pyrogenic water that contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol (9 mg/mL) as an added bacteriostatic preservative. The benzyl alcohol inhibits the multiplication of common bacterial contaminants, which is what allows a single multi-dose vial to be entered repeatedly — conventionally for up to 28 days after the first puncture — rather than being discarded after one use like plain sterile water.
